How we ranked these Sahara tours

Every desert tour from Marrakech sells the same headline images, so we ignored the marketing and looked at four things that actually change your experience: the route and how far the dunes really are, the group size, what is included overnight, and the price per night rather than the sticker price. The result is a short list that covers the most popular budgets and travel styles rather than one single winner.

All of the tours below leave from Marrakech and are bookable online with free cancellation through Viator. We are an independent guide, not the operator, so the booking and the on the ground service are handled by the tour company.

The classic 3 day Merzouga tour

If you only read one section, read this one. The 3 day Merzouga tour is the route most people picture when they think of the Moroccan Sahara. You drive over the Tizi n Tichka pass, stop at the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah and the Todra gorge, then ride a camel into the tall Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and a night in a camp. The next morning you watch the sunrise over the sand and drive back.

Prices start from about $107 per person for a shared group tour. The hero version on this site has a perfect rating across hundreds of reviews. The trade off is two long driving days, roughly 9 hours each way, so this works best if you are happy to see a lot of Morocco from the window.

More comfort: luxury and private Merzouga

For a softer version of the same route, a luxury 3 day Merzouga tour from around $145 upgrades the desert camp with private bathrooms and better food while keeping the famous dunes. Two of the most booked options on Viator are the most reviewed 3 day Merzouga trip at about $128 and a slightly cheaper budget 3 day version from $117, both with tens of thousands of reviews between them.

If you want to travel at your own pace, private tours remove the shared minibus. A private 4 day tour that ends in Fes from $389 is popular with travelers heading north afterwards, so you are not backtracking to Marrakech.

Going deeper: Erg Chigaga and 5 day trips

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are the easy famous ones. The Erg Chigaga dunes near Mhamid are bigger, wilder and far less visited because they need a longer 4x4 approach. A 4 day private Erg Chigaga tour from $817 is the premium pick for travelers who want remote dunes and are willing to pay for a small group. For a relaxed multi stop loop, a 5 day private Sahara and Erg Chebbi tour from $381 spreads the same distance over more days.

Short on time: Agafay instead

Not everyone has three days. The Agafay desert is a rocky moonscape less than an hour from Marrakech, so you can do a sunset dinner with a camel ride and live music and be back at your hotel the same night. It is not the Sahara and it has no tall sand dunes, but for a single free evening it is a genuinely good substitute. See our full desert comparison if you are torn between options.

Frequently asked questions

For most travelers the classic 3 day Merzouga tour is the best balance of time, scenery and price. You cross the Atlas Mountains, see the Dades and Todra gorges, ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes and sleep in a desert camp. Prices start from around $107 per person.

Three days is the minimum for the real Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, since the drive is about 9 hours each way. A 2 day Zagora tour is shorter but reaches smaller dunes. Four and five day private tours add Erg Chigaga and more relaxed pacing.

Yes for most people. The combination of the Atlas passes, kasbahs, gorges, a camel trek and a night under the stars is hard to match. The main trade off is long driving days, so a 3 day trip is more comfortable than trying to do it in two.
