If you only read one section, read this one. The 3 day Merzouga tour is the route most people picture when they think of the Moroccan Sahara. You drive over the Tizi n Tichka pass, stop at the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah and the Todra gorge, then ride a camel into the tall Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and a night in a camp. The next morning you watch the sunrise over the sand and drive back.

More comfort: luxury and private Merzouga

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are the easy famous ones. The Erg Chigaga dunes near Mhamid are bigger, wilder and far less visited because they need a longer 4x4 approach. Short on time: Agafay instead
Not everyone has three days. The Agafay desert is a rocky moonscape less than an hour from Marrakech, so you can do a sunset dinner with a camel ride and live music and be back at your hotel the same night.
