Why the season matters so much here

The Erg Chebbi dunes are beautiful in every month, but the desert climate swings hard between extremes. The same dunes that bake at over 40 degrees in July can drop near freezing on a January night. Because the camel ride and the camp night are outdoor experiences, the season directly shapes how comfortable and how memorable the trip is. The classic way to reach the dunes is the 3 day Merzouga tour from $107, and in the colder months a luxury 3 day tour from $145 with warmer bedding is worth the upgrade. We are an independent guide, not the operator.

Spring: March to May, the sweet spot

Spring is the best all round time. Days are warm enough for shirtsleeves but not punishing, and nights are cool rather than cold, so the camp is comfortable with a light jacket. The desert is at its most photogenic, and April in particular is close to ideal. The only downside is that this is a popular window, so book ahead. If you can only travel once, aim for spring.

Autumn: September to November, the equal best

Autumn matches spring for comfort. The summer heat has faded, the nights are pleasant and the light is soft. October is a standout month, with warm days and mild evenings. Like spring, it is busy, so reserve your tour early. Many regular visitors actually prefer autumn because the desert has had a long dry season and the dunes feel especially clean and sculpted.

Summer: June to August, hot but cheaper

Summer is when the dunes are at their hottest, often above 40 degrees in the day. The midday hours are genuinely hard, and the long drive from Marrakech is tiring in the heat. The reason people still go is timing. The camel ride is at sunset and the dunes are best at sunrise, both of which are far cooler. If you visit in summer, lean into those golden hours, drink constantly and consider our Marrakech in summer tips for the city side of the trip.

Winter: December to February, cold nights, clear days

Winter divides people. The days are mild, sunny and clear, which is lovely for the dunes, but the nights can hit freezing. With a proper jacket and a warmer camp it is a wonderful, quiet time to visit, and prices are often lower. The clear winter skies also make the stargazing exceptional. Just do not underestimate the cold after dark, and read our what to wear guide before you pack.

The short answer

For comfort, go in April, May, October or November. For lower prices and fewer crowds, go in summer or winter and adjust your kit and your timing to the heat or the cold. Whichever you pick, the camel ride into the dunes at sunset is the constant. Frequently asked questions

April and October are widely considered the best months. Days are warm and pleasant for the camel ride and the dunes, and nights are cool but not freezing, which makes the camp comfortable. March, May, September and November are also excellent, so the spring and autumn shoulder seasons are the safe choice.

Summer at the Erg Chebbi dunes is very hot, often well above 40 degrees in the day, so the midday hours are tough. People still visit because the camel ride and the dune time happen at sunset and sunrise when it is cooler. If you go in summer, prioritise the early and late hours and drink plenty of water.

Winter nights at Erg Chebbi can drop close to freezing, sometimes below it. The days are mild and clear, which many travelers love, but you need warm layers and a good jacket for the camp evening. Booking a luxury camp with better bedding makes a winter night much more comfortable.
