First, know the distances
The Sahara is not close to Marrakech, and that shapes every option. The famous Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are about 560 km away, roughly 9 hours of driving across the High Atlas. The closer Zagora dunes are about 360 km, around 7 hours. The rocky Agafay desert is the exception at just 40 minutes, but it has no real dunes. Once you accept that the real Sahara is a full day of driving away, the options make more sense.
Option 1: organised multi day tour (easiest)
For the vast majority of travelers, a multi day tour is the answer. It bundles the transport, a driver or guide, the sightseeing stops, the camel trek and the desert camp into one booking, so you do not have to coordinate anything. A 3 day Merzouga tour from $107 is the standard choice, and shared departures run daily. This is also the cheapest practical way to see the dunes, because the cost is split across the group.
Option 2: private driver
A private driver gives you a car and the freedom to stop where you like, but you still need to arrange the camp and camel trek at the other end. It costs more than a shared tour and only really makes sense for groups or travelers with specific needs. Many people who want flexibility book a private tour instead, which still includes the camp and the route but adds the private vehicle.
Option 3: long distance bus
Supratours and CTM run buses from Marrakech toward Merzouga, usually overnight. They are cheap and reliable, but they only solve the transport half of the problem. Once you arrive you still have to find a camel trek operator and a camp, and arrange your return. This suits independent budget travelers with time to spare, not someone who wants a smooth experience.
Option 4: self drive
Renting a car and driving yourself is possible and the Tizi n Tichka pass is paved, but it is a long, mountainous drive with sections that demand attention. You also still need to book the camp and camel trek. Self drive appeals to confident drivers who want total freedom, but most visitors find the savings are not worth the effort once fuel and the hassle are counted.
What about flying
There are small airports at Errachidia and Ouarzazate, but flights are infrequent and you would still need ground transport to the dunes. For practical purposes there is no useful flight from Marrakech to the Sahara. Road is the only realistic way in.
Our recommendation
Book an organised multi day tour. It is the easiest, usually the cheapest, and it removes every logistical headache. Once you have decided how to get there, the next question is which dunes, which we cover in our Merzouga vs Zagora guide, and when to go, in our best time guide. For official road and safety information, check the Morocco travel advice page before you go.
The easy way to the dunes
One booking covers transport, guide and a desert camp, with free cancellation.
Frequently asked questions
No. Morocco has no train line to the desert towns of Merzouga or Zagora. The railway serves cities like Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech, but the Sahara is reached by road only, whether by organised tour, private driver or long distance bus.
About 9 hours covering roughly 560 km, crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n Tichka pass. Because of this distance, the Merzouga dunes are visited on tours of at least three days rather than as a day trip.
Yes, but it is harder. Supratours and CTM buses run to Merzouga, and you can hire a private driver, but you then have to arrange the camel trek, the desert camp and the return yourself. For most travelers an all in one tour is simpler and not much more expensive.
