Two very different green escapes
Both trips get you out of dusty Marrakech into greenery and water, but they offer different days. Ouzoud is a destination in itself, a tall, thundering waterfall with a boat ride and resident monkeys, reached after a longer drive. Ourika is a valley you wander, cool and close, with the Atlas rising behind it. Neither is wrong, they simply suit different priorities. We are an independent guide, not the operator, so the booking is handled by the tour company with free cancellation usually available.
Distance and the shape of the day
Ouzoud is about 2.5 hours from Marrakech each way, so the day is a real outing with a good chunk of driving. The Ouzoud waterfalls day trip from $19 is excellent value for the spectacle, but expect a full day. Ourika is roughly an hour away, which leaves far more time on the ground and makes it a relaxed half to full day. It often comes bundled with the Atlas foothills, as in a 5 valleys Atlas tour from $25. If you want minimal driving, Ourika wins on logistics alone.
Scenery and what you do
Ouzoud
Ouzoud is the showstopper. The falls drop over 100 metres in tiers, you take a small boat to the base for the spray and the rainbows, and wild Barbary monkeys roam the path down. In warm weather you can swim in the pools beneath the cascade. It is the more memorable photo and the bigger natural set piece. Our full Ouzoud guide covers the visit in detail.
Ourika
Ourika is gentler and greener. You follow the river up the valley, walk to a series of small waterfalls, and stop at riverside cafes where tables sit right in the water. It is cooler than the city and the Atlas backdrop is beautiful. The walk to the upper falls is a bit of a scramble but manageable. See our Ourika valley tours guide for the options.
Heat, crowds and season
In summer, Ourika is the smart pick because the valley and its river are noticeably cooler and you avoid a long hot drive. Ouzoud is best in spring and autumn when the falls are full and the walk down is comfortable. Both get busy at weekends with local visitors, so a weekday trip is calmer. If escaping the heat is the goal, Ourika edges it. If you want the single most impressive sight, Ouzoud is worth the extra hours in the car.
The verdict
Choose Ouzoud for the waterfall spectacle, the boat ride and the monkeys, and accept the longer drive. Choose Ourika for a cool, close, easy valley day, especially in summer. If you have two free days you can do both, but for a single day let the weather and your appetite for driving decide. Either way, both make a fine contrast to a Sahara desert tour earlier in your trip.

Frequently asked questions
Ouzoud is the better choice for dramatic scenery, with Morocco's tallest waterfall, a boat ride under the falls and wild monkeys, but it is a longer 2.5 hour drive each way. Ourika is closer at about an hour, cooler and greener, and pairs well with the Atlas foothills. Choose Ouzoud for the spectacle and Ourika for an easy, cool escape.
Ouzoud waterfalls are around 2.5 hours from Marrakech by road, so the day involves more driving. The Ourika valley is much closer, about an hour away, which leaves more time on the ground and makes it a relaxed half to full day rather than a long drive.
You can swim in the natural pools at the base of the Ouzoud falls, which is a highlight in warm weather, and you can paddle and cool off in the river at Ourika. Ourika is especially popular in summer for exactly this reason, since the valley and the water are noticeably cooler than the city.
