Two trips, opposite directions
Marrakech sits between two of Morocco's great landscapes, and they pull in opposite directions. South and east, far away, lie the golden Sahara dunes. South and close, within easy reach, rise the High Atlas Mountains. The choice between them is really a choice about time, since one needs days and the other fits into an afternoon. Both are worthwhile, and they are not mutually exclusive.
The Sahara: the multi day icon
The Sahara is the bucket list trip. The tall Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are about nine hours from Marrakech, so reaching them means a 3 day Merzouga tour from $107 at minimum, with a camel ride into the dunes, a night in a desert camp and a sunrise over the sand. It is the more committing option in time and effort, but for many travelers the dunes are the single image they came to Morocco for, and the long drive is part of the adventure.
The Atlas Mountains: the great day trip
The High Atlas Mountains are the answer when you only have a day. A High Atlas day trip from about $25 reaches Berber villages, terraced valleys and mountain viewpoints within a couple of hours of the city, often with a Berber lunch and a short walk. The greener Ourika valley nearby is another easy mountain day with waterfalls and riverside cafes. You are back in Marrakech for dinner, so it costs only a day and a modest fee, which is why it is one of the best value trips around the city.
Or do both
The good news is you rarely have to choose. A common and satisfying plan is an Atlas Mountains day trip early in your stay, then a multi day Sahara tour later, giving you both the mountains and the dunes on one holiday. If your time is very tight, the rocky Agafay desert under an hour from Marrakech offers a desert taste in half a day, a third option between the two. How to choose
If the dunes are non negotiable and you have three days, do the Sahara. If you only have a day or want a gentler, cheaper trip, do the Atlas Mountains, with the Ourika valley as the easy green option, covered in our Ourika and Atlas day tours guide. And if you can, do both, since they show two completely different sides of Morocco from the same base.
