Best Day Trips from Marrakech
Agafay desert and the Atlas Mountains
The two easiest day trips sit close to the city. The Agafay rocky desert is only 40 minutes away and offers lunar landscapes, camel rides, quad biking and sunset dinners in tented camps, ideal for a half day or evening. The Atlas Mountains and the Ourika valley take a full day, with Berber villages, a guided walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls and lunch beside the river. The Three Valleys and Imlil are mountain alternatives for keen walkers. Both regions are cooler than the city in summer.
Essaouira and the Ouzoud waterfalls
For a change of scene, two longer trips reward the drive. Essaouira on the Atlantic coast is about 2.5 hours away, a breezy port town with a walled medina, ramparts, an argan oil cooperative on the road and fresh grilled seafood at the harbour. The Ouzoud waterfalls, also about 2.5 hours, are the tallest in Morocco at around 110 metres, with shaded paths, wild Barbary macaques and a boat to the base of the falls. Both make a relaxed full day out of the city.
Ait Ben Haddou and what needs more than a day
Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen kasbah used in many films, lies about 3.5 to 4 hours away over the Tizi n Tichka pass, near Ouarzazate. It can be done as a very long single day, but it is far more comfortable as the first stop on a multi-day Sahara tour. The real sand dunes are the clearest case for more time, since Merzouga is about 9 hours each way and Zagora about 7, so neither works as a day trip. Plan those as two or three day tours instead.
