The short answer
If you want the classic Sahara with tall sand dunes, go to Merzouga and give it three days. If you only have two days and want a taste of the desert at lower cost, go to Zagora. The difference comes down to one thing: distance. Merzouga is far enough that it needs an extra day, and that extra day buys you much bigger dunes.
Distance and driving time
Merzouga sits beside the Erg Chebbi dunes about 560 km from Marrakech, which is roughly 9 hours of driving each way. Zagora is closer at about 360 km, around 7 hours. That gap is the entire reason these are different tours. A 3 day Merzouga tour spreads the long drive across the Atlas Mountains with proper stops, while a 2 day Zagora trip keeps the driving shorter so it fits a tight schedule.
The dunes themselves
This is where Merzouga wins. The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga rise up to 150 metres, forming the dramatic golden waves that fill Sahara photos. Zagora has dunes too, but they are smaller and more scattered, set in a stonier landscape. If a camel trek over towering sand at sunset is the image in your head, that is Merzouga, not Zagora.
Time, cost and the overnight
Zagora is cheaper and faster, which is its main appeal. Merzouga costs a little more and takes an extra day, but the night in a camp under the big dunes is the part most people remember. The most booked Merzouga options are the 3 day tour at $128 and a budget version at $117, both with enormous review counts, so you are not paying a huge premium for the better dunes.
What about Agafay
There is a third desert that often gets lumped into this debate. Agafay is a rocky desert under an hour from Marrakech, perfect for a single evening but with no real dunes at all. It is not a substitute for Merzouga, but it beats both if you literally have no spare days. We compare all three side by side in the which desert guide.
Our recommendation
For most travelers, Merzouga is worth the extra day. The drive is long but scenic, the dunes are the real thing, and the price difference over Zagora is small. Only choose Zagora if your schedule genuinely cannot fit three days. And if you cannot fit even two, do an Agafay evening and save the Sahara for next time. Frequently asked questions
Merzouga is better for scenery. It has the tall golden Erg Chebbi dunes that most people picture when they imagine the Sahara, and it allows a proper camel trek and camp under big dunes. Zagora is closer and cheaper but its dunes are smaller and less dramatic. If you can spare three days, Merzouga is the better experience.
Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, roughly 9 hours of driving each way, which is why it needs at least three days. Zagora is closer at about 360 km, around 7 hours, so it can be done as a 2 day trip.
It is not recommended. The 9 hour each way drive means a 2 day Merzouga trip is almost all driving with very little time at the dunes. Two day tours go to Zagora instead. For Merzouga, plan for three days.
