The shape of a 3 day Sahara tour
Almost every 3 day Sahara tour from Marrakech follows the same loop, because the geography decides the route. You drive south and east on day one, reach the dunes on day two, and drive back on day three. The differences between operators are comfort, group size and how rushed the schedule feels, not the places you see. Knowing the shape in advance lets you compare prices fairly. The classic version is the 3 day Merzouga tour from $107, and the most reviewed option is the 3 day Merzouga trip at about $128.
We are an independent guide, not the operator. The booking and the on the ground service are handled by the tour company, and free cancellation is usually available through Viator.
Day one: Marrakech to the Dades valley
You leave Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n Tichka pass over the High Atlas, one of the most scenic drives in Morocco. The first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village that has appeared in countless films. After lunch you continue through Ouarzazate and into the Dades valley, where you spend the first night in a hotel. This is the longest driving day, so expect a lot of time looking out of the window at mountain switchbacks and palm oases.
Day two: gorges, then the dunes
The second day is the payoff. You drive through the dramatic Todra gorge, where cliffs rise hundreds of metres on either side of a narrow river, then continue across increasingly empty land toward Merzouga. In the late afternoon you swap the vehicle for a camel and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset. You spend the night in a desert camp, eat dinner under the stars and, if the sky is clear, see more of it than you ever do at home. This is the moment the whole trip is built around.
What the camp night is actually like
Standard camps have shared bathrooms and simple tents, while luxury camps add private bathrooms and better bedding. If comfort matters, a luxury 3 day Merzouga tour from $145 upgrades this night. Either way you wake before dawn for the sunrise over the dunes, which is worth the early alarm.
Day three: the return to Marrakech
After sunrise and breakfast you ride the camels back out of the dunes and begin the long drive home. Day three is mostly road, with a lunch stop and a few photo breaks, arriving back in Marrakech in the evening. Some tours offer a variation that ends in Fes instead, which avoids backtracking if you are heading north. See our best 3 day desert tours guide for those options.
How to make the most of it
Pack layers, since desert nights are cold even in summer, and bring more water than you think you need. Sit on the left side of the vehicle heading out for the best mountain views, and book the tour for the start of your Marrakech trip so a rare weather delay does not eat your whole holiday. For timing, our best time for the Erg Chebbi dunes guide shows which months to target. If three days feels too long, the rocky Agafay desert near the city is a single evening alternative.

Frequently asked questions
A typical 3 day tour includes transport in a shared minibus or 4x4, two nights of accommodation with one of them in a desert camp, breakfast and dinner each day, a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes and stops at Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades valley and the Todra gorge. Lunches, drinks and tips are usually extra.
The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga is around 9 hours each way, split across the first two days with sightseeing stops. Day one is the longest stretch of driving, day two mixes driving with the gorges and the camel ride, and day three is mostly the return run to Marrakech.
Three days is enough to reach the real Erg Chebbi dunes, ride a camel, sleep in a camp and see the main Atlas and gorge highlights. If you want a slower pace or the remote Erg Chigaga dunes, a 4 or 5 day private tour gives you more time, but most travelers find 3 days the right balance of cost and experience.
